Enormous fire rips through Kuwait City skyscraper after drone bombardment

Israeli strikes targeted Iranian oil deposits last night as another fire raged through Kuwait City,setting a large tower alight.

Kuwait’s military has been working to intercept missile and drone attacks from Iran,but several explosions were reported early this morning,leading to a massive tower blaze.

Two border guards were killed when a swarm of missiles and drones hit Kuwait earlier today,with the Interior Ministry saying that the guards were killed ‘while performing their national duty’.

The targets on Kuwait City come after Israel struck oil depots north of Tehran early this morning,sending smoke clouds blooming over the skyline.

The Shahran Oil Depot,which stores gasoline and other products in tanks which serve Tehran’s residents,was in flames.

It appeared to be the first time a civil industrial facility has been targeted in the war.

State media blamed ‘an attack from the US and the Zionist regime’ at the site that supplies the capital and neighbouring provinces in the north.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian apologised on Saturday for attacks on ‘neighbouring countries,’ even as his country’s missiles and drones flew toward Gulf Arab states and hard-liners asserted that Tehran’s war strategy would not change.

Today,Israel renewed its assault on southern Lebanon early on Sunday,including targeting commanders of the Lebanese branch of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised ‘many surprises’ for the next phase of the conflict.

The Israeli military said in a statement that it would ‘not allow Iranian terrorist elements to establish themselves in Lebanese territory’.

Elsewhere,Iran’s temporary leadership council is facing pressure to swiftly appoint a new supreme leader,according to reports.

The nation’s Assembly of Experts could meet within a day to choose the next leader,after former Ayatollah Ali Khamenei,86 was killed by US-Israeli strikes on Tehran.

One assembly member,Ayatollah Hossein Mozafari,suggested that the clerics would shortly convene.

It is unclear whether the 88-member council would meet in person or online,with some consultations having been conducted remotely.

Since Khamenei’s assassination,Iran has been led by a three-person council comprising President Masoud Pezeshkian,Chief Justice Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i and Ayatollah Alireza Arafi.

The Iranian Ambassador to the UK,Seyed Ali Mousavi,told Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg his country would have a ‘right to self-defence’ if the UK directly joined US-Israeli attacks on Iran.

He warned that Iran expected the British government,and others,‘to be very delicate,very careful’.
